Abstract® Nailing It For A Cause!

Why is it so important to support the park?

Virunga National Park is the oldest national park in Africa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most biodiverse park in the world, home to more than 900 different species. The park is mainly known for housing more than half of the world's population of Mountain Gorillas.

In 1994 the park was given the status of "Endangered"due to large-scale poaching and illegal logging for the production of charcoal. But the Congolese civil war also brought many rebels with it, who found refuge in Virunga Park.

Guarding the park with rangers, both in the air and on the ground, comes at a high price... Today Anthony Caere is head of AIRWING and together with more than 700 rangers he is responsible for the protection and preservation of this beautiful piece of nature covering no less than 7800 km². He contributes to the community of the people in and around Virunga Park and is partly responsible for bringing stability back to the region so that tourism can flourish again.

In October 2019, we proposed the Abstract® Nailing It For A Cause project. We launched the Virunga Color Gel collection to support the work of the Airwing. A whopping €7500 thanks to all Abstract® fans and their customers were able to make an integral donation to the Virunga Airwing. This donation was partly invested in the purchase of a Bat Hawk.

The Covid pandemic also hit Africa hard. The poverty and loss of income from tourism took a heavy toll on the Virunga National Park's population, rangers and staff.

Sofie Devlieger therefore decided to set up another Abstract® Nailing It For A Cause project this year to support the preservation of the beautiful fauna and flora of Virunga National Park and the Airwing.
